Announcing the Northstar Free School!

HEY LOVELIES! We've been doing some thinking here at Northstar central, and we've come to the realization that we should put more emphasis into the free school element of our vision.

We've always been planning on hosting free workshops and skillshares under the banner of a free school, but now we're REALLY planning on it. We're super psyched. This perfectly compliments our work as a bookstore and community center, and very much supports our values of autonomy, mutual aid, and self-sustainability.

So, here's what the Free School is going to look like:

  • We'll be hosting classes, workshops, skillshares, and lectures. Screen printing, herbal remedies, peoples' history, storytelling circles, home brewing... The possibilities are infinite!
  • All classes will be organized by volunteers. Know how to make herbal remedies or how to build a home greywater system? Facilitate a class!
  • Most classes will be 100% free and open to all ages. Classes will be interactive, engaging, and empowering.
  • We're going to dedicate an entire portion of our space to the free school. Hopefully an entire backroom, if we find an accommodating space. We want to provide a space where people can focus on connecting and sharing.

We're still on track for opening next summer (woooo!!), and we'll start seeking out class facilitators a month or two before opening, so stay tuned! Oh, and let us know what you think! Feedback is always welcome. <3

A quick shout out to our homies.

THE RED AND BLACK CAFE! We love'em. They host an awesome bookshelf in which we sell our literary wares, they host tons of amazing radical events, and they make the best fuggin kale and quinoa (with tempeh bacon!) ever. They also just added a really awesome guide to rad places in Portland to their website. It's really impressive, and we'll probably be copying it soon. And they're a worker co-op! <3

TOTAL REDESIGN!

We just got done (or almost done?) with redesigning our website! We're going from a more standard, static website to a more content-rich blog format. What does this mean?

  • Frequent updates on our progress.
  • Blog posts on cool stuff happening around town.
  • And coming soon: a super rad community events calendar.

Should be pretty awesome. Stay tuned, and let us know what you think!
